General

  • Binary Eye: Scan QR codes.
  • DiskUsage: Manage free space and used space on your device visually.
  • F-Droid: An app store for open source applications.
  • Fcitx5 for Android: A keyboard. I also use Fcitx on my desktop as well. Not the best keyboard out there, but this one has English, Vietnamese and Japanese support.
  • Muzei: Wallpaper app. It can switch between many wallpapers. Pretty hard to use to be honest.
  • Shizuku: For applications that need root permissions.
  • Termux: A terminal emulator. Can't live without Linux.
  • VLC: A video and music player.

Internet

Web browsers

  • Mull: My primary web browser. Basically a hardened version of Firefox Mobile.
  • Fulguris: Fallback web browser. I use it to access some websites that broke on Mull.
  • FFUpdater: A privacy respecting browsers downloader/updater.

Social medias / Instant messaging

  • Aliucord: A Discord client for mobile that is customizable and respect your privacy by default.
  • Husky: A mobile client for Mastodon and Pleroma.
  • Infinity: A third-party client for Reddit. This one isn't dead yet. #FuckSpez
  • Revolution IRC: The next-generation IRC client. I don't use it too often.
  • SchildiChat: Client for Matrix. A fork of Element. Still bloated and slow but I have no better options.

Others

  • ReThinkDNS: Formerly BraveDNS. It works somewhat like a VPN, but better.
  • LibreTube: An open source YouTube client built with Piped. Less buggy compared to NewPipe.
  • Tachiyomi: An app for manga reading. Very cool app. You can get mangas from multiple sources.
  • Aniyomi: A fork of Tachiyomi. It is basically just Tachiyomi but for anime.
  • Feeder: RSS feed reader.
  • GitNex: A client of Forgejo and Gitea.
  • K-9 Mail: For emails. It used to be pretty buggy but not anymore.
  • Nextcloud: Nextcloud client for your mobile. Pretty fast compared to desktop.
  • Organic Maps: OpenStreetMap.

Learning

Japanese

  • Kakugo: An app that can help you memorize Hiragana and Katakana characters.
  • Nani?: Offline Japanese dictionary.
  • AnkiDroid: Anki for Android. I use it to review flashcards offline. Anki has free sync, so why not?
  • Joplin: A note-taking app. You can sync your notes with Nextcloud. Awesome alternative to Obsidian.

Privacy

  • Aurora Store: An open-source alternative to Google Play Store with privacy and modern design. Anonymous accounts were broken, you will have to login with your Google account.
  • Hail: Freeze other applications. Your phone's battery will thank you.
  • Insular: Isolate applications you do not trust.
  • Nitter: An alternative front end for Twitter/X.

Customization

Games

  • Chess.com: I play chess. The app is named "Chess" on Google Store.
  • Lichess: Chess but open source. I also play chess here. This has many interesting features, compared to Chess.com.
  • osu!: LAZORS!!
  • Puzzles: Contains a lot of puzzles. Some puzzles are somewhat hard to understand though.
  • SuperTuxKart: An awesome racing game. Very fun. Recommended.
  • Unciv: An turn-based civilization-building game.
  • Other (proprietary) games: Geometry Dash, Genshin Impact (:P), Soul Knight.
